Art Background
Diane Powers discovered a passion for painting when she was rendering scientific illustrations while working towards her B.A. in Biological Sciences at Southern Illinois University. During an elected art class she was recommended to study in Paris under Patrick Betaudier. It was at Mr. Betaudier’s Atelier Neo Medici that Diane realized her love for Renaissance and figurative painting. It is under the direction of Mr. Betaudier that Diane learned the “technique mixte”, a painting method that employs a tempera emulsion that is coated with multiple layers of oil glaze.
The painting method she learned while studying in France is a centuries old technique used by Renaissance painters in the 15th century. Paintings begin with an accurate graphite rendering. Then earth tone tempera is added to create a dimensional underlayment upon which colored oils are added. Each painting is actually a series of illustration, underlayment and layers upon layers of colors. This painstaking method of painting yields a finished piece that has uncanny depth, dimension and luminosity that must be seen to be believed.
Diane has also attended Northern Illinois University, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work “In the Arms of an Angel” was dedicated to those who lost their lives at Columbine High School, and received publicity in the Chicago Tribune. She received recognition as a finalist out of 13,000 applicants in the “still-life competition” in Artist Magazine. She is currently working on an assortment of commission pieces.

Good Knights
This painting is a heartfelt tribute to the family and friends who stood by me during my battle with breast cancer. My two boys, just 9 and 6 at the time, became my little heroes, gently lifting me by the shoulder so I could sit up after surgery. Much of my art springs from the beauty of my garden and the hardships I have faced, weaving together nature and resilience.

Good Mournings
This painting is dedicated to my Mom who died of dementia and medical complications during my battle with Breast Cancer.

In the Arms of an Angel
Dedicated to the victims of the Columbine shooting on April 20, 1999.
When the massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, occurred, I had two young boys. At the time, my oldest son was preparing to enter kindergarten, and my thoughts were consumed with fear for my children's safety at school.
I empathized deeply with the affected families, realizing how a single moment could alter everything. As I painted 'In the Arms of an Angel,' I felt a wave of emotions — fear, sorrow, and a resolve to remember the victims through my art. This painting became a testament to both the fragility and resilience of life. Over the 26 years since, there have been more than 400 deadly school shootings in America. How can we transform this collective grief into action for change? Can we add prayer back into our schools?
The painting features an angel holding thirteen Columbine flowers, the state flower of Colorado. The angel floats over a sea of water, symbolizing the tears that have been shed. The water at the bottom merges into the stars of the universe and the
mysteries of sadness.
I find solace in Revelation 16:5 NKJ
And I heard the angel of the waters saying: You are righteous, O Lord, The One who is and who was and who is to be, Because
You have judged these things.

Bring the best of your firstfruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God. Exodus 23:19
FirstFruit This was painted in a studio in the south of France, where my concentration was focused and my creativity was enlightened. The distinct light and atmosphere inspired what I consider the best of my works. Although it isn't my first painting, it is my finest, and it is dedicated to the Lord.
